Key Dates in YWCA Princeton History

  • 1922

    YWCA Princeton receives its charter from the national YWCA on January 4th

  • 1925

    The YWCA’s Committee on Colored Work leads to the establishment of the Witherspoon Branch of YWCA Princeton

  • 1948

    The Witherspoon Branch is incorporated into YWCA Princeton as a unified entity

  • 1950

    Sadie Poulson Dickerson is the first woman of color to be elected president of YWCA Princeton

  • 1959

    Newcomers and Friends program begins. The group currently has over 200 members

  • 1963

    The Pearl Bates Scholarship Fund is established to enable economically disadvantaged women and girls of the community to participate in YWCA Princeton's programs

  • 1985

    Bramwell House is purchased. ENCORE program formally becomes the Breast Cancer Resource Center

  • 1992

    Latinas Unidas is established in Trenton

  • 1995

    The Nursery School at YWCA Princeton begins with two classroom in the current program building

  • 2007

    Stand Against Racism is founded through a combined effort by YWCA Princeton and the former YWCA Trenton

  • 2020

    The Burke Foundation Early Childhood Center at YWCA Princeton completes a major renovation of its program building
