YWCA Princeton is on a mission to eliminate racism, empower women, and promote peace, justice, freedom, and dignity for all. We take a Stand Against Racism every day by raising awareness about the impact of institutional and structural racism and by building community among those who work for racial justice.
Founded by YWCA Trenton and YWCA Princeton in 2007, Stand Against Racism quickly grew to a national presence by 2010, when an additional 80 YWCA local associations across the nation participated. The campaign has changed and evolved but the work at its core remains the same: we know that we cannot empower all women without confronting systemic racism. This year, YWCA Princeton will honor its legacy of Stand Against Racism through a conversation with New York Times bestselling author Dr. Roxane Gay.
Roxane Gay is an author and cultural critic whose writing is unmatched and widely revered. Her work garners international acclaim for its reflective, no-holds-barred exploration of feminism and social criticism. With a deft eye on modern culture, she brilliantly critiques its ebb and flow with both wit and ferocity. She is the author of the books Ayiti, An Untamed State, the New York Times bestselling Bad Feminist, the nationally bestselling Difficult Women and the New York Times bestselling Hunger. She is also the author of World of Wakanda for Marvel. In 2018, she was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship. She is currently the Gloria Steinem Endowed Chair in Media, Culture and Feminist Studies at Rutgers University’s Institute for Women’s Leadership.

Kara Alaimo, PhD is a communication professor at Fairleigh Dickinson University, where she created the university’s programs in social media. She is author of Over the Influence: Why Social Media is Toxic for Women and Girls – And How We Can Take It Back, which explains how social media is affecting every aspect of the lives of women and girls and what we can do about it. She has been writing for CNN Opinion about the social impact of social media and issues affecting women since 2016. A former spokesperson in the Obama administration and communicator at the United Nations, she lives in New Jersey with her family.
