On Saturday, October 13th, the YWCA Princeton’s Breast Cancer Resource Center (BCRC) hosted its second Community Health Fair. Over two hundred attendees came to the Community Health Fair to access free health services and education. In total, the Community Health Fair provided 49 blood pressure and blood sugar screenings, 34 mammograms, 30 clinical breast exams, and 42 eye exams.
Assemblyman Roy Freiman, representing the 16th Legislative District of New Jersey, visited the Community Health Fair on Saturday. “In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, I am working to emphasize healthcare’s vital role in a woman’s ability to live freely and equally in society. It’s important not only to voice solidarity with those affected by breast and reproductive cancers, but also to ensure access to the testing, treatment, and educational resources they need. Special thanks to the YWCA Princeton for organizing such an important event,” stated Assemblyman Freiman.
Access to healthcare and health education remains critical for women, especially women of color. The YWCA Princeton’s BCRC Community Health Fair was the kickoff event in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Volunteers from BlackRock, the Community Health Fair sponsor, were also onsite to triage attendees to their health screenings.
“This month is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and our Community Health Fair is our first event. We want to bring attention to the importance of access to health services, especially for women and women of color. Access continues to be a barrier and we believe it is part of our mission to ensure that people know where in the community they can get their mammograms, blood pressure screenings, eye exams and other important health services,” remarked Paula Flory, Director of the Breast Cancer Resource Center.
The YWCA Princeton and its BCRC would like to thank this year’s participating vendors: Horizon NJ Health, CBVI Project Best, Walgreens, Princeton Radiology, PennMedicine, Living Beyond Breast Cancer, The Plastic Surgery Center, Trenton Health Team, Princeton Health Department and Nomad Pizza.
