Literacy Programs

Our ESL Program puts YWCA’s mission to empower women and eliminate racism into action through classes that help tear down obstacles facing some of our community members. As a multicultural center, YWCA Princeton is a safe meeting place for students to interact with one another, in an atmosphere that fosters friendships, and promotes self-confidence. Our program offers classes for learners at all levels to improve their abilities in spoken and written English. Classes are held year-round with start dates in September, January and July.

About our program

Our ESL program excels through its low teacher-student ratio and wealth of immersion opportunities outside of class. Drop-in conversations, one-on-one and small group practice sessions occur daily. Workshops ranging from everyday survival to job search skills, and strong partnerships with other local organizations, help students integrate into everyday life. Students are encouraged to take an active role in the community as citizens, parents, and workers. We introduce students to varied cultures with emphasis on our own local culture, not only in the classroom, but also in informal settings, such as our potluck luncheons.

Under Title II program, students are eligible for free core and reading/vocabulary classes. Students must make an appointment to take a placement test before enrolling. They will be guided to appropriate core and enrichment classes. Free child care is available. Please inquire when registering.

Additional classes

We also offer free High School Equivalency preparation classes that equip students to pass the New Jersey High School Diploma exam. Testing itself is conveniently arranged at our on-site HiSET® Testing Center. Free citizenship preparation classes give students the information and self-confidence for their naturalization interview.

We invite you to meet with us in person to discuss your particular needs and how we can help you move forward with your literacy goals. We currently serve 26 Central New Jersey municipalities drawing adult students of all ages from Mercer, Middlesex, Somerset and Bucks County.
