Breast Cancer – What You Need to Know
Kara Stephenson, 609-497-2100, ext. 346The Breast Cancer Resource Center can help your community organization, school class, church group, company or woman’s group get the facts about breast cancer. The “Breast Cancer – What You Need to Know” presentation is offered by a professional breast health educator and discusses breast cancer myths and misconceptions, risk factors, signs and symptoms, and screening methods. Participants will be shown the correct way to do a Breast Self-Examination (BSE) and will have an opportunity to feel simulated breast lumps in a silicone breast model. A breast cancer survivor will also share her personal experience with the disease, and each participant will receive an information package to take home. Presentations are approximately 60 minutes long, including time for Q&A, and are tailored to the audience (age, ethnicity, gender etc.).
Language Learning and Cultural Assimilation
Chandana Mahadeswaraswamy, 609-497-2100, ext. 306Integrating into the local community is a daunting challenge, but the YWCA Princeton’s English as a Second Language Department has been helping immigrants make the transition for many years. Our ESL Program Specialist can speak about self-esteem, learning English, cultural assimilation, cultural sensitivity, and many other timely issues.
Health and Fitness Builds More Than Just Strong Bodies
Tara O’Shea, 609-497-2100, ext. 334The benefits of keeping fit and maintaining a healthy lifestyle cannot be overestimated. Obesity in children and teenagers (and, of course, adults) is rampant in the U.S—how can we try to be a part of the solution? How can we bolster the self-esteem of teenage girls, and instill in them the confidence to participate in even the most non-competitive of sports? How can an already active woman insert a fitness program into her busy day? These topics and related issues can be addressed by our “fitness gurus!”
Water Safety
Barbara Griggs, 690-497-2100, ext. 309Half-hour talks on water safety topics such as home pool safety, diving safety (rules, hazards, etc.), and do’s and don’ts around water. Also offered is the Whales Tails Program, a special program of the American Red Cross that is geared for grammar school-age children (5-12 years).
