GED Prep Evening Classes NEW!
The ESL Program is a comprehensive Adult English as a Second Language Program offering over 40 ESL classes to men and women with widely divergent language abilities and backgrounds. We instruct over 400 students annually who hail from about 40 countries and speak nearly 27 different languages.
We differentiate ourselves from other ESL programs. Students learn in an “immersion-type” atmosphere. The program provides varied opportunities to encourage language development. Examples include:
- One-on-one and small group conversation practice with community volunteers;
- Onsite access to the premier computer-based Rosetta Stone language system;
- Workshops given by volunteers and organizations on topics of interest such as job search skills and financial management, as well as everyday survival skills;
- Collaboration with the Princeton Public Library and Princeton University which offers our ESL students interaction with community members and Princeton University’s students in an educational environment.
As a cross-cultural center, the YWCA Princeton serves as a safe meeting place for students to interact with one another. Its atmosphere fosters friendships and promotes self-confidence, encouraging students to take an active role in the community as citizens, parents, and workers. We introduce students to varied cultures with emphasis on our own local culture through multiple events throughout the year. Some of these opportunities include:
- Annual International Day when students share their customs and cultures with the community and embrace diversity;
- Potluck meals at which students, teachers, and volunteers share a variety of ethnic food from world-wide cuisines;
- Special classes taught by our own students and volunteers, such as Japanese Culture and Etiquette; India Culture Series
- Publication in our newsletter, Cultural Concepts;
- Opportunities to become volunteers for all YWCA Princeton’s variety of programs;
- Field trips to museums, sculpture gardens, historic landmarks, local police department, first aid and rescue squad, theaters, NYC and Philadelphia.
